In November, New Harlem Productions will stage Cake, a new play written by Donna-Michelle St. Bernard, at Theatre Passe Muraille. The show is about Niger’s uranium mining, and it’s a part of the 54ology, St. Bernard’s project aiming to create one performance work drawn from each country in Africa. In Cake, Oba is holding on to the last threads of his old life and is determined to maintain what he can by any means necessary. It’s a story about the things we use, how we are used, and what happens when we are all used up.

The cast features Jamie Robinson, Ash Knight, Yolanda Bonnell, and Tsholo Khalema.

The production, directed by Clare Preuss, will be on at Theatre Passe Muraille’s backspace from November 17 to December 3. It will have costumes by Elizabeth Traicus, lighting by Echo Zhou, set by Jackie Chau, composition and sound design by Maddie Bautista, choreography by Pulga Muchochoma, art by Mary Wong, and stage management by Heather Bellingham.

Fun facts! The Cake team tells us their favourite kind of cake.

Jamie Robinson

Oba

The Grand Sasso cake, from Montreal. Under the title, it says: ”Too long to describe.” Always my go-to since I had my first back in June 1995. Oh, how I remember that day like it was yesterday!

Ash Knight

Aarif

Chocolate Peanut Butter Brownie Ice Cream Cake. I don't know if it exists, but the more sweet flavours the better! I need help.

Yolanda Bonnell

Femi

Okay, so, there's this chocolate explosion cake that is only available at Boston Pizza. It's like chocolate mousse and little bits of cheesecake and is worth almost $8 a slice. Why is it my favourite? Well ... it has chocolate mousse and bits of cheesecake ... so ...

Tsholo Khalema

Mabo

Chocolate and cherry.

Donna-Michelle St. Bernard

Playwright

Red velvet, because it is decadence and I am worthy.

Clare Preuss

Director

I love dense chocolate cake with lots of thick chocolate icing. I love chocolate in all forms, the darker the better.
