Although the premise of Girl on the verge of self-actualization is enticing, and one that the trio approaches with clear, affecting lyrics, Tiger Bride stops short of fully embracing the messiness of her metamorphosis.

Soulpepper’s Tiger Bride offers a ‘wildly transformative’ audience experience, says Hailey Gillis
“It starts out in a hyper-fairy-tale world, and then we slowly, by the end of it, move into a rock-n’-roll basement concert,” says creator-performer Hailey Gillis. “We're just left with guitars and sweaty bodies and loudspeakers."

Playwright-performer Coleen Shirin MacPherson refers to herself as “colonized upon arrival,” born in Canada yet shaped by migrations and erasures that predate her birth. “I don’t have an ancient song or a lullaby that connects us across generations,” she tells her child. That absence — of song, language, and unbroken tradition — propels the Cahoots Theatre production.
