Casting Announcement: Tarragon Theatre’s 2018 Productions
Tarragon Theatre has announced their full casting for the productions in the second half of their 2017/2018 season: Hamlet, Mustard, Cottagers and Indians, Bunny, and Girls Like That.
Beginning the year is artistic director Richard Rose’s ambitious rock and roll concert of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, directed by Rose. With musical direction and composition by Thomas Ryder Payne and performed by the eleven-member ensemble, this contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s classic uses rock music as a vehicle to express a young generation’s anger at the hypocrisy of the world. Hamlet features Noah Reid in the titular role, Nigel Shawn Williams, Rachel Cairns, Brandon McGibbon, Jack Nicholsen, Jesse LaVercombe, Tiffany Ayalik, Tantoo Cardinal, Beau Dixon, Greg Gale, and Cliff Saunders.
Running alongside Hamlet in the Extraspace is the remount of Kat Sandler’s Mustard, featuring many of the original cast members. Directed by Ashlie Corcoran, Mustard is a dark and twisted fairy tale about an imaginary friend’s quest to stay in our world; a whimsical story about growing up, losing innocence and our unrelenting quest for love. Reprising his Dora Award–winning title role is Anand Rajaram, who will be performing alongside fellow remount cast members: Sarah Dodd, Rebecca Liddiard, and Tony Nappo, with newcomers Travis Seetoo and Conrad Coates.
Later in the year, Herbie Barnes and Tracey Hoyt will star in Drew Hayden Taylor’s Cottagers and Indians, directed by Patti Shaughnessy. This sincere and pragmatic look at conflicts between traditional First Nations water usage and cottage property owners is more relevant than ever with the current disputes over harvesting of wild rice on Pigeon, Chemong and Buckhorn Lakes in the Kawarthas.
Maev Beaty leads the Toronto premiere of Bunny, written by Hannah Moscovitch and directed by Sarah Garton Stanley, which premiered in Stratford in 2016. Bunny is a play about repressive social convention, personal inhibition, and desire unleashed. Cyrus Lane, Matthew Edison, Gabriella Albino, Tony Ofori, and Jesse LaVercombe will be joining Beaty on stage.
Rounding out the 2017/18 season is the Canadian premiere of Evan Placey’s Girls Like That. Placey returns home from the UK with his explosive new play that explores the evolution of feminist consciousness and modern female friendships in the wake of advancing technology. Directed by Tarragon’s assistant artistic director Esther Jun and choreographed by Alyssa Martin, the all-female cast features Cynthia Hicks, Nadine Bhabha, Lucy Hill, Tess Benger, Rachel VanDuzer, Shakura Dickson, and Allison Edwards-Crewe.
