Toronto’s Nightwood Theatre has announced Naz Afsahi (she/they) as the new Managing Director of the company. Afsahi brings over a decade of experience in the Toronto theatre industry to the role, including a seven-year stint at Nightwood as a Metcalfe Intern, then Business Manager and Artistic Associate.

Nightwood Artistic Director Andrea Donaldson said in a press release that Afsahi is “a trusted collaborator who speaks her mind and shares her heart…I’m confident Naz will make an incredible mark on Nightwood and on our theatre industry.”

Afsahi’s work in theatre is grounded in principles of social justice and anti-oppression, with a specific interest in power dynamics and systems of privilege. Afsahi’s approach to feminism, a core tenet of Nightwood operations and aesthetics, is an intersectional one. According to Nightwood’s MD Search Committee, Afsahi possesses a sharp understanding of systems of oppression, as well as how those systems can be challenged to better support artists and arts workers.
